|
What assessment task are we working towards? You will participate in the United Nations' #TellEveryone campaign by promoting awareness of one of the new Global Goals. You will produce an A3 infographic for display at school and possibly for sharing on social media, plus give some short answers to questions about the thinking behind your infographic. There is a focus on the Power, Social Change and Communication assessment criteria.

(1) Looking BackwardsEight ambitious goals were established by the United Nations back in the year 2000, with targets set for the year 2015. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) reflect the priorities of the world at that time.
The infographics to the right show what was achieved in each of these areas from the year 2000 to 2015. |
(2) Looking ForwardsIn 2015 was time to set goals for the next 15 years. Social media played a huge part in determining the new goals - much more so than was even imaginable technologically back in the year 2000. The priorities have been expanded and reflect social changes since the start of the millennium.
17 new "Global Goals" have been ratified by the United Nations on on 25th September 2015, with 193 world leaders committing to them. More detailed targets are currently being negotiated for the year 2030. |
This TED Talk by Michael Green provides more detail about why it is important to have goals and how we can measure if we are meeting them.
The Social Progress Index he describes relates closely to "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs" - a useful theory for our Society and Culture course:
|
The first stage of implementing the new Global Goals is to "Tell Everyone!" and publicise that the goals exist. Your generation will play a key part in meeting the targets - think how old you will be by the year 2030 and how much you hope to achieve by then! How can you help draw your peers' attention to the goals?
