Back to school

Today was the first day of Term 2 in South Australia and I returned to Golden Grove High School to teach for the first time in 2020.

I was so pleased to have most of my fabulous homegroup attend via MS Teams and to catch up with colleagues.  I'm looking forward to meeting my five new classes virtually.

I've completed a draft interim report for the Churchill Trust, as I intend complete my US itinerary in 2021.  The report is currently under review and I will share it as soon as it is finalised and published on the Trust's website.

Overseas and interstate readers may be interested in the public communication from SA Health below, which gives some insight into the situation here.  I continue to think of all the people I met in countries affected far more than Australia, and hope that they and their loved ones are safe and healthy.

Made it home!  Thank you Andrea Capel from FCM Travel Solutions and Meg Gilmartin from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust for your excellent customer service  in arranging our early return to Australia.

We now have to observe two weeks' quarantine at home...time to write my report!

I made this infographic for a quick visual summary of my incredible experience so far as a Churchill Fellow - hope you find the stats interesting!

Moab and Salt Lake City

Tomorrow we're departing Utah, after being in Moab since we left Washington DC.  Despite the circumstances, I've been so lucky to tour such a stunning part of the world.  I still want to tell you a little about how I ended up coming here and why I'm committed to returning to Salt Lake City for the 2021 NCHE Conference and more!

Washington DC (2)

I was fortunate to be able to keep all of my appointments in Washington DC before the COVID-19 restrictions set in.  It was brilliant to start my first trip to the USA in the nation's capital.  I met formally with Teaching for Change, the National History Day National Office, Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum and Museum on Main Street.  I squeezed in lots of visits to cultural institutions too!

We live in extraordinary times!  Please rest assured I am currently safe and healthy, as is my husband Simon who joined me in Washington DC on Tuesday night.  We are continuing to monitor official updates and are taking the evolving situation day by day.  The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust are providing excellent support.

Wales

The time was right to visit Wales, as they are developing a new curriculum framework for 2022.  I also happened to arrive in Cardiff in time for the spirited St David's Day concert at St David's Hall.  Wales also lowered its voting age for the National Assembly to 16 at the start of 2020 - I wish we could follow suit in South Australia!

To break up the drive from Scotland to Wales, I spent the night at the World Heritage Site, Ironbridge Gorge: the 'Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution'.  I'm so pleased I did!

Scotland

Apart from wanting to be in a place where people know how to pronounce Elspeth, Scotland was an obvious choice when selecting destinations with a strong sense of identity grounded in history.  I began by making contact with Dr Joseph (Joe) Smith, whose recent publications are directly relevant to my Fellowship (including one from March 2019 and another in August 2019).  Joe has been a dynamic host from the outset, and I am especially grateful that he was still able to accommodate my visit with a tertiary education strike underway (which I support as a teacher who has  participated in recent industrial action back home!)

Civic museums' branding
Last time I was in Glasgow (2008), I spent most of the short trip visiting the Kibble Education and Care Centre, researching my great-grandfather Lewis Grant (aka Pop) and other boys who emigrated to South Australia as farm apprentices. This weekend I had time for more general sightseeing.  How lovely it is to enter a museum when you've been wandering about in snow and hail!
